Is it safe to rename a Moodle role?

Hi, all through our organization we assign the non-editing teacher role to our Instructors and I go course by course doing a renaming (sometimes I use CSV) to Instructor. My question is, is it safe to rename the custom-full-name from non-editing teacher to instructor and save me the work?

Will it not conflict with Moodle upgrades? I am not planning to touch the shortname which is teacher.

Yes, it is safe. You can change the custom name of a role at any time: it is purely for cosmetic for use in the interface. Moodle doesn't use that "under the hood" in any way to do things like permissions or role maintenance, etc.
