I saw that there was a discussion here on this about a year ago. As far as I can see there's still no search function within book. So why is there the opportunity to tag within settings? What's the point of tagging if it's not possible to search? Just wondering. It would really help promote the use of Moodle Book to be able to search within the book.

Do you have, Enable global search, enabled? By default it is not turned on! Go to Site administration / plugins / Search / Manage global search. You make sure you visit all the listed links. You will see that when you go to Index data, that there are a couple of entries for Books: resource information, chapters.

YMMV depending on the version of Moodle. This was in Moodle 3.9.x and 3.11 (soon to be released code)
