Adding user overrides before a quiz starts

Adding user overrides before a quiz starts

A colleague has come to me with an interesting problem. For one of his courses, he is mandated to give extra time to a few differently-abled students who need the extra 5-10 minutes to address the disadvantage they face due to various disabilities.

He added the override but he got this error:

"Student does not have the correct group or role to attempt the quiz".

Is the message due to the fact that the attempt has not started yet. When the exam starts, will the student get the extra time specified in the override (so the message can be ignored)?

No, I doubt that this is because the student has not started yet.

My guess is that the student does not have the correct group or role. Have you checked if "groups" are being used, and if the quiz is using a group for any special reason? Is this student's role "student?" Has your Moodle admin set up any special roles?

You might consider creating a "bogus" student, logging in as this student, and see what happens?  Start with a simple student, see if this student can take the quiz. Then, little by little, match this bogus student's role and group to the real student.

In this case, the student is excluded from the activity as it is restricted until about 5 minutes prior to the start of the exam. The 5 minutes are supposed to give enough time for students to read the instructions, settle down, etc.

Most courses at our university use groups, and this one is no exception. I have given overrides to students in other courses during the attempt, and those have worked, Giving overrides prior to the course is new to me, so was curious about whether this message can be ignored.

I found that individual overrides don’t work when you have groups in a course. I create a group for the students I want to give overrides to in courses where I use groups. In some cases the students are only in the group temporarily until they have completed the quiz, while others are in the special group and others for duration of the course.

Hello all,

I think the warning message is more explicit in newer versions of Moodle. I added Inactive override ↗ in "Quiz Settings" on MoodleDocs. Hope this makes sense and will be helpful.

I agree the wording of that message is not very clear. It was made better in MDL-68309 which gave the current wording, but there is probably scope for it to be improved further.
