Sorry I should have said Moodle 3.86.
That has helped so much. I think it comes down to I was looking in the right place in the log files, but no one had been deleted for some time, hence the not sure I was in the right place.
I do have the configurable reports in and I think I should get a better grip on it as I find it quite difficult to work especially when trying to apply the SQL rather than just pulling in readily available fields.
We do have authentication plugins, but we have the sync set up to only sync what is there rather than create and delete as we were not comfortable with what it might delete that we were not expecting.
