Wierd behaviour Assignment Module

Dear community,

This is Joaquín Peña posting from Spain. Currently, I'm using my own Windows PC to serve my students. I'm running Moodle 3.7.1.

My doubt is related to the assignment module. Students are meant to submit a file as you can see below:

I'm still standing in owe of this wierd and unexpected behaviour. Moodle should not allow students to complete the submission process unless they have added a file, but this is what I've found for the very first time in years:

Where is the attached file? Why does the status reads  as "submitted" when no file is showing?

My pupil says he sent the file and I do trust him, let alone he has a point when the submission status is green.

I do hope I am doing something wrong with the submission settings, since I'd like to keep on trusting this module.

Thanks so much

Would seriously suggest you nominate the type of files you want them to upload, a docx, xlsx, odt, psd, gif, png - whatever. I usually limit this to doc, docx, xls, xlsx for most documents, mp4 for videos, psd for Photoshop uploads - depending on the assignment requirements.
The second thing I always do is force students to make sure they're ready to upload a file but requiring the submit button be used.
Never had anything resembling this problem before.

TL;DR - Check if the student removed his submission for some reason. The "Submitted for grading" message stays even after a submission is removed.

  1. Note: In Moodle 3.7 a new feature was introduced - the ability to remove submissions (MDL-64377).
  2. Go to the course logs, and check if the user removed his submission after he submitted it for the first time. You should find an indication for that:

  3. If that's what happened, please note MDL-66203 ("The submission status stays "Submitted for grading" after a submission is removed by or for the student"), which is my opinion a bug.

I've looked into the student's logs, and you were right. The student just removed his submission. Probably, he was just fiddling with this and that until he did what students do..., bungling it up.

Thanks so much for your help and time.
