Global Search Behaving Strangely

Global Search Behaving Strangely

We have Moodle 3.5.9 on a Linux/Apache server

My global search settings are that users can search across anything they have access to. It is the Simple Search.

Global search is behaving strangely for us. Say our site was about gardening. A lot of words on the site would be garden.

If I type in garden, I get no results. If I type in garden+space I get many results. Or, I might get no results again. If I type in garden hose I get results.

It's as though the word garden appears too often so it requires more information to find this word. Is this possibly what's happening?

Is there somewhere people can set the search engine not to find a particular word that occurs many times, like garden?

I have reindexed the site a few times, still have this problem.

Has anyone got any ideas?

Hello,

I have the same kind of issue since we've updated to 3.8 : let's say we have a course with title "UE 1.1 Learning to cook"

If I type "cook" i'm getting results, but if I type "UE 1.1" or "UE" I don't get any results.

**Edit** : I'm getting better results by disabling global search in /admin/search.php?query=enableglobalsearch

I'll try to turn it back on after next update to see if it's fixed.
