Linking to network locations in Internet Explorer/Edge

Linking to network locations in Internet Explorer/Edge

In Moodle 2.9, I was able to link to a network location with a link similar to this:

file://drivelocation/Quality/BRMH_Scorecard/

After upgrading to Moodle 3.7.2+ from 2.9.5, the link is either automatically removed or simply does not work. If I edit the html I can add the link, but it doesn't do anything when I click on it. If I paste the link into a new tab, it works.

Is Moodle restricting access to network locations in later versions? Or is there a setting to allow this?

This functionality is critical to the success of our intranet... thank you for any suggestions you have.

I have a feeling this may be at least partially related to the fact our test site is not in the intranet security zone. I'll update this thread once group policy is fixed.

Do you know whether "the link is either automatically removed or simply does not work"? For that you need to switch to the (plain) HTML mode in the WYSIWYG editor. The tool is only visible in the extended tool bar in Atto, it has the icon </>.

@Visvanath @Ken
Thanks for the responses! I found that my suspicion was correct and adding the test site to the Intranet zone fixed the problem with actually being able to open a link to the network. One of Ken's links mentioned a similar solution.

As for the link removing itself, after further testing it appears this only happens in the wiki text editor. We can live with that probably.

Don't mean to beat what might be a dead horse, but ...

Ok, you've found a way to make such links work now.   When, in the future ... Moodle drops support for IE ... and Microsoft also moves in a direction to separate old IE behavior from Edge ... you'll have how many links like that?

Kinda like sites today that are moving from http:// to https:// (TLS) ... moodle currently has an admin tool for that (httpsreplace).   That's because of massive number of Moodle sites needing.

Ticking Time Bombs in Moodle?   Maybe ... case in point "Legacy file System".

If there isn't a admin tool for how you have linked, you might be looking for a tool ... you'll be looking at how many links?

Not sure I understand. Are you saying that they will be removing the file link functionality in Edge? The link you posted showed that Edge still allows that behavior. We just want our intranet to be a one-stop-shop to all resources staff need, some of which are on our local network.

My crystal ball no clearer than anyone else's!  Windows XP was a popular OS ... is it still around?  I do know that using something proprietary isn't good ... at least in my book.

Your goal for an intranet site like many/many others so it's not unique.  One could pick what works now ... or try to project into future (future proof?).   Is there another way to provide access to WAN/LAN files?

Maybe I should be asking you to do research on LAN/WAN usage and computers/smartphones and tablets.

Have seen this ... what I'll call 'dis-connect' and not very 'future proofed' ... internal staff ... while their desktop computer maintained by internal IT staff might be 100% Windows, creeping in are other devices .... like iPads.  Some even allow internal staff to use their own smartphones to connect to local wifi ... are those phones iPhones?

Seems the entire globe is very interested in handheld smart devices/tabs/phones (mobile).   Case in point ... a sales type dropped by the house a couple of days ago to check up on the security system I have .... and they had an iPad.   Ditto for HVAC folks who came to service the HVAC system in my home.

An old saying ... 'begin with the end in mind' ... should have a modern corolary .... 'begin with the end device in mind'.

My 2 cents, of course!

Qualifications for this response .... none ... just past experience having done web stuff that was really proprietary and wishing I hadn't ...

Future Proof Site?

My future predicting abilities are nil ... but think future proofing site now might best ... for when the day comes, how many legacy links will you have that need correcting.   From what you've said, ability to is 'key' to your intranet site. :|
