So technically we currently support Internet Explorer... but how long do we want to continue doing so?

Internet Explorer has been deprecated, and replaced with Edge (which came out in March 2015). However, IE is still supported as long as the OS that it came with is supported. Internet Explorer 11 was still shipped with WIndows 10, and Windows 10 support does not end until October 14 2025.

I would love to propose that we actually drop support for IE11 before then. Edge is the mainstream and it has been for many years. Why do I suggest we do this..? Because IE does not support a lot of modern JavaScript features that we would often like to use.

I am aware that many people do still use IE, but I think that we can come to a compromise on when we phase out its support.

So I'm hoping to get some informal information about who still uses IE (for anything other than testing), and what is your timeline for moving away from it?

I think that, from the Open University data, the answer is 'not yet but it is on its way out':

OU browser stats, showing IE11 at just over 5%

And here is a possibly more useful graph comparing data for Microsoft browser usage from the last two 12-month periods.

Comparison of browser stats for the last two years

So, page-views using IE went down from 212,000 -> 148,000, or to 70% of what they were.

We work mostly in low-income countries in Africa and see that Internet Explorer was reduced to 2.6% this year.

Google Chrome 69.3%
Firefox 16.1%
Edge 4.2%
Opera 3%
MS Internet Explorer 2.6%
Safari 2.1%
