Hi Jon - yes, that is the type of "auditor" I mean - a student who is taking the class but not receiving a grade. If there is a better name for this role (more understandable in countries outside North America) I'd be happy to switch terminology.
Given the number of permissions that would need to be added to a Guest to allow participation in a class, that seems a complicated path to creating an Auditor role. The "Student without grades" approach would likely involve fewer changes, but of course the trick is figuring out which permissions result in the creation of grades in the gradebook so they can be turned off. Either approach would like end up with the same result...
