I’m interested in why Choice isn’t working for you. We use it for an honor pledge that the students must agree to before they can see anything else in the course. The honor pledge is in the general section at the top and the activity completion settings are set to must submit to complete. The restrict access settings for the first topic are set to the honor pledge must be marked complete and is hidden. Once the students complete the honor pledge they can see the first topic in the course and proceed from there.

Choice would work.

So would Feedback. The only drawback with Feedback is that you can’t have a single answer - but I’ve done NDAs with a “I Agree... Yes/No” where Yes = activity is completed and therefore releases restricted content.

I did this recently, so here's a working example...

  • Set up Feedback activity
  • Set activity completion as "Show activity as complete when conditions are met"
  • Tick the box for "View as completed if the feedback is submitted"
  • (optional) Add a description "question": Below you'll find our site rules... blah blah
  • Add a multiple choice question with the following settings:
    • Question: I agree
    • Multiple choice type: Multiple choice, single answer
    • Hide the "Not selected" option: Yes
    • Do not analyse empty submits: No
    • Multiple choice values: Yes

So they only have one answer option - ie. Yes, I agree - so they can only submit if they agree. Once they submit, the activity is complete. If they don't agree, they can't submit ;)

Then in your other activity / topics, you can set Restrict Access based on the completion of the Feedback activity.

... and Bob's your uncle 😁

You can just use a "Label", configured with a manual completion tracking ("Student can manually mark the activity as completed"). Then, restrict access to the rest of the course conditioned on the completion of this label.

This will give you checkbox right on the course page.

I use this not for NDAs, but as a way to introduce a little friction before a high stake activity, to make sure students have read and (say they) understand an explanation.
