No Subtitles option in the embedded videos

Hi everyone

we are in the process of updating our e-courses and we noticed that in the videos, those that are embedded  in the course do not display the subtitles options. Does anyone know what might be happening and better yet, how to fix it?

Hello. I'm just going to move your question to the General help forum. Could you give more details as to the type of embedded videos you use - what file types? Are they hosted on your server or externally eg on Youtube? Which version of Moodle do you have? Are you using the VideoJS player ?

Hi Mary

Is it perhaps this tracker issue: MDL-61987? There might also be a linked issue here https://github.com/videojs/videojs-youtube/issues/432

The above is assuming you are using VideoJS player. If so then just copy and paste the Youtube link to embed it. If you are not using the VideoJS player, then I'm not sure of the issue -perhaps you can provide more information?

Hi Mary, thanks a lot for your assistance.

I am the system administrator of the Moodle of Cintia's post above.

The issue it is related with the https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-61987 above. The Moodle version effected is 3.4.+

The issue happens when linking a video from youtube in the normal atto editor.

It is a shame because before it was very easy to have the users switch the subs within the embedded video, but now it is not possible anymore.

The only solution -until the issue is solved -  would be to upload the videos directly in our Moodle. Did I understand correctly?

Could you please send me a format for the file of the subs?

thanks a lot!

Looking forward to your answer, have a great weekend!

I am not an expert on this I have to say- it has just been my experience but yes, either simply paste the Youtube link (which is what we do) or upload the video file directly into your Moodle site. The subtitles can be in VTT format - see https://w3c.github.io/webvtt/

Hi Mary, thanks a lot.

We cannot paste the YouTube video because the subs will not work (this is the issue)

So we need to upload the videos in our moodle directly.

thanks for sharing the link!

Ah yes, sorry I forgot to mention - in our site we have disabled the setting  Youtube videos in the VideoJS player settings. This means that when you paste a youtube video as a URL, it is displayed as it does on YouTube and not via the VideoJS player. (Make sure YouTube videos are enabled in Manage media players from Site administration.) Thanks to you  I added a note to the Media FAQ documentation.

Click on the word "Video."  This should show more information, including the ability to add subtitles.
