Need information about connecting to data sources version 2.8.6 (Build: 20150511)

I'm not completely sure I know the right terminology for what I need to know. My agency has asked me to investigate other LMS; we've been using Moodle for more than 10 years and I think some people think Moodle can't compete...I think it is more that no one has explained what they want to see so they think Moodle can't.  If you don't tell me you want it, I can't give it...

Anyway.  Several of the products I've looked at seem capable of populating accounts with more than one source of data--so not only would accounts connect to our active directory, they would also connect to our human resources systems (Oracle) as well.  Is this possible with Moodle? And if it is possible, how do we do it?

Short answer - yes!

How you do it depends on exactly what you want to do. Also consider that Moodle is open source and has a highly pluggable architecture. This means that it can be relatively straightforward (and relatively inexpensive) to develop custom plugins to provide these links to external sources so it works exactly how you want it to. 

It really all comes down to the details though - but it certainly can be done either with core code or readily achievable custom plugins
