I never got this to work with a flat navigation display, which I like for some things. However, reverting to a traditional display allows users to collapse the course folder or even park navigation on the sidebar, so we disabled flat navigation.
I'm still curious about how to limit course listing displays in the side field in flat navigation, but our modification will work for this year.
