disabling messaging during exams

disabling messaging during exams

I'm sure this was asked before, however I could not find it via the forum search.

Is there a way to prevent students from using the messaging system while they are attempting a quiz?

Right now, we are using Safe Exam Browser, but I feel like it is kinda useless to increase the security on one side, while this gaping hole is open on the other.

Any thoughts on this?

Hi Stefan,

If you are using SEB maybe you can activate the URL filter and block "moodle.com"/message.

I'd say that would be the easier way.

hi hugo,

that works to disable access to the messaging page, but messages still show up in the messages dropdown menu (in boost theme) during a quiz.

Oh I see. I think the theme itself should prevent that.

Sorry not being able to help.

Hi

Did you try to play with the settings here:

message/defaultoutputs.php

or here:

admin/message.php ?

Regards

the first one is only valid for a given user, and the second one only lets me completely disable messaging.

what im searching for is a solution that just disables messages during exams, to prevent cheating

I'm thinking this is pretty darn important!  Stefan, maybe you should submit a tracker item.

sorry, I forgot to update this thread when the problem was solved

apparently, SafeExam browser usually automatically uses the safe version of the theme, where messaging is already disabled.

At our site, we had the old experimental SafeExamBrowser quiz access rule active along with the new and updated one (that allows for browser keys)

Apparently this caused the problem. Ever since switching off the old setting, messaging is disabled during SEB quizzes. However, curiously, I was unable to even reproduce the problem after turning the old setting back on. Maybe it was a weird glitch, it is not a common problem either way.
