I finally got Moodle 2.9.9 installed and am now wading through the administering the site.
Thank you to all of you for your encouragement and help.
One of the techs at the hosting company kindly offered to install for me as he "needed to learn about this monster," and he also got the path names wrong. They have really good techs who are happy to work around the problems.
I needed a knowledgeable programmer/developer and one phone call to our hosting company and we finally worked it out.
I have another issue now - I think I will have many in the months to come, but will post that in the right place.
