Professional help upgrading without contract

Hi Moodlers. We are a small non-profit running a very old version of Moodle (1.9.10). We are looking to upgrade to a non-beta 3+ version (3.1 maybe). We have a small amount of custom coding (to the certificate and PayPal modules) and do have the diff files for that. How do I go about finding an individual or company to tackle this upgrade without having to commit to a Moodle partner? We are on a dedicated server and would like to avoid the trauma of moving (as well as the additional cost). In addition, we would have to move our front-end site as well, which is built on Joomla. Just too much hassle if we can avoid that.

Any suggestions and experiences would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Erik,

There is no direct upgrade process from 1.9 to 3.1.3 or 3.2.1+.

First, you will have to upgrade to 2.2+ versions and then to 2.8.

Once done, you can do the final upgrade from 2.8+ to 3.2.1+ or any other stable version released after 3.0.

please note :- create the backup for all the files (Dataroot and database with Moodle installation directory also if you are having anything hard coded).  smile

Hello Erik,

Not a warning. Just the standard process for the best outcome smile

As Sandeep mentioned there is a somewhat painful upgrade "march" from 1.9 see https://docs.moodle.org/32/en/Upgrading_FAQ#How_do_I_upgrade_from_1.9.x_to_3.2.3F

Most people would actually advise you to look into the possibilities of just biting the bullet and installing a fresh 3.2 and recreating any courses still current.

It's not a bad idea to look into doing as you suggest. Our issue would be importing our DB with historical records of our students, etc. I'll dig into this idea a bit more. Thanks!

Hello Erik,

There will not be any data loss as such.

If database size it too much then you can use heidisql for exporting (to take a local backup) and SSH for importing.

What's wrong with a Moodle Partner?  Before you say, "they are too expensive" have you asked? Especially some of the smaller ones.

Failing that, what about posting on the Moodle jobs page - https://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?d=54

We have had discussions with several Moodle partners, and we're a small non-profit that carefully counts every dollar. If we have to go with a partner and it appears to be the best course for us, we will find a way to do it. We are just exploring our options now. Thanks!
