The group functionality in Moodle seems a little difficult to handle for many teachers. Is there a possibility for students to hand in an assignment on behalf of other students? That would make it easy for the group functionality and for the teacher to let the students decide for them selves which group they are a member of - when theres no need of official groups or groups made by the teacher.

Basically no. A student realistically should always be turning in their own work!
There is a plugin however that allows students to pick what group they want to be in and then you can set it so that the group only turns in a single assignment for the whole group (the groups need to be set up though). I guess you could set the assignment to allow multiple files and then one student could upload say five files, one named for each member of the group.
