LDAP and Active Directory documentation

I've notice a huge ratio of questions on this forum are about ldap auth and active directory in particular and a lot of them seem to be just problems with the set up. In a lot of cases people just didn't set the context and user attributes correctly.

Does anyone have any ideas of how we can improve the active directory documentation so that people can set it up more easily?

I'd like to improve it a lot, but as a programmer the way I think about it might be different to the way most admins think about it. I can already tell the documentation is quite technical, such as using the config names rather than the names in the UI.

Good idea.  We should take a look at that.  I will if I can find some time today to visit that.

Not quite sure how you find that AD one but this one is better https://docs.moodle.org/30/en/LDAP_authentication

It is also the one that is linked to from here https://docs.moodle.org/30/en/Authentication not the one you provided. So I'm not sure how you find that link. Seems to be a duplicate page with insufficient info. Might be better to have that link to the proper LDAP one for more detailed info or just bin it.

I found various pages when I looked yesterday plus a pdf that added further confusion.  One of the pages was pretty comprehensive but I think it would be good to have an Active Directory quick guide or step by step guide.

Good point. Maybe we could move all the active directory stuff from LDAP_authentication to the Active_Directory page. So everything is in the same place.

Or perhaps we could make the LDAP page have all the information about AD and the AD page could have a step by step guide like Emma mentioned.

I did actually go in and clean up the LDAP page some but you are right, but think we should also add the step by step the LDAP page.  If anyone wants to start on that, great.  If not I will try and get to it next week.
