one-to-one forum

Hi all,

I am looking into creating a forum with 1 teacher and multiple students. I would like each student to be able to post multiple times and see his/her own posts only....kinda like a private discussion between the student and the teacher.

P.S. i dont want to use the messaging system as i want the teacher to be able to see all posts at one time.

I will be using Moodle 2.9

Appreciate the help?

I believe there is a forum type in the OU ForumNG plugin that does exactly this

Thank You Richard,

This is exactly what i was looking for. why isn't it part of moodle core..it just seems right to be there.

That discussion has been giong on for a long time - there are other 'advanced forums' that people also want to be included in core, in the meantime we have them as plugins only smile

Zeid, good question, one of the key discussions is here: https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-47161

The official MoodleHQ view has not been supportive of individual tutor to students communication being in the core apart from messaging (which has the problems you indicate)

Martin has suggested the dialogue module as a "consilation prize" - https://moodle.org/plugins/mod_dialogue

We have used this with success.  The interface is different, and it is clear these are 1<>1 conversations private with the teacher.  ie students don't get con fused with where they are.

Thank you Derek,

Yes the messaging system is like a private chat, but for those who want the regular tools and extra administration, there should be a 1 on 1 activity. I downloaded the ForumNG plugin and its working great...only thing is its not sending out emails when i try to post.

Thank again  you for much for that informative reply and links. smile

Hi Zeid,

There is an activity, Dialogue, that is 1 on 1, and with a little trickery, can be set so that students can start a dialogue ONLY with people whose role is admin, manager, teacher, or non-editing teacher. The trick is to put each student in a group by themselves and have the dialogue set to, Use course groups. The reason for the trick is that I did not want students using DIalogue to have conversations with other students, only me.

This might not be convenient for you though, if you use groups in the course already. Since I was the only teacher at my school using Moodle, I got around this problem by putting the Dialogue on the front page of the Moodle site. I haven't tested it, but this limitation could possibly be overcome by using Groupings.

Have you thought about using the Database Activity comments feature with view other entries only after a large number. I think that will give you what you're looking for without requiring any modifications.

Hello All,

There is no way in moodle (i think) to do it..... I downloaded the ForumNG plugin as Richard has advised me and its working fully. its kind of weird there is no such thing at the moment.
