Some installation help.

I installed moodle on a shared host for now till I can add the content and go live:

I have the following newbie questions, bear with me.

1. When I enter my domain I get the following message before the site redirects to my moodle installation:

"Incorrect access detected, this server may be accessed only through "http://environics.edu.in" address, sorry.
Please notify server administrator."

Did I make a mistake in dns setting or is it because the domain registrar and the site host are different?

2. I am interested in a theme that says it uses HTML5 & CSS . Should I stick to the default themes or take the plunge straight with a new theme? what does experience say?

3. Hosting advise. Contacted 2 moodle partners and one of them answered sent a quote that sounds more expensive than other hosting options. Can I risk hosting elsewhere?

Check the value in your config.php file that points to $CFG->wwwroot

If it is different in any way from your domain you will get that message. Stay with core themes until you are happy and comfortable with Moodle. Then if you have problems  once you switch to an alternative theme you will know it is the theme not Moodle. Moodle partners are specialists, they are experts in their area. Other hosting wil be generalists so your decision should be based on how technical you or the people you work with, your budget and how important your Moodle is to you. I know that is not a definitive answer, but it is a bit like "which car should I buy", the answer is "it depends".

I recently got a quote from some Moodle partners and when I saw the price at first thought it was "that is expensive", then on second thought it was "that is about twice what it costs to hire some plumbers by the hour, and with all respect to plumbers, that is reasonable value".

(OK plumbers do deal with gas and that can kill you whereas you are unlikely to have a fatal Moodle incident)

in addition to what Markus said, regarding the error message, that would enable your moodle to be accessed via www.mymoodle.com but then if someone tries to use mymoodle.com (without www) then they will get same error message.

if you are on CPanel hosting, then make use of redirect function, and it will take care of the part where either will work without user being notified of errors.

Regarding hosting, one can expect Moodle partners to be expensive, for then you dont have to worry about Moodle's maintenance, installations, backups and configurations. If you believe you manage to get enough of the experience with Moodle to handle things on your own, then by all means you can go with any of the hosting company that suits your budget and requirements for your particular moodle installation. Its assumed that MOST of the people using Moodle platform are non-IT teachers who will be best at their subject, but when it comes to administering Moodle they lack skills, this is where Moodle expert partners comes into play.

Thank you Usman Asar.

In our case, all the faculty are IT saavy non-academic people and I the campus administrator am perhaps the least experienced (we consider our moodle site a part of the physical campus too!!) . But have spent the last few days figuring out moodle as I have been installing our moodle site.  I remember once long ago I was moodling around for a while but moodle is growing friendlier by the day. Also this community is wonderful and friendly. Perhaps we can get away without professional support. The option of seeking their services is always there if it comes to a crunch as you suggest.

Thank you for the support.

Regards
