How can I require an entry in a text or text area field?

I am using Dataform version 2015051100 2.9 in Moodle 2.9.1 and want to require an entry in a text field or a text area field. The exclamation mark works with the file field, but if I use the exclamation mark with text or text area, the user cannot add an entry at all. How can I require an entry in a text or text area field?

The pattern flag for required field is *. The ! flag is supposed to make the field non-editable. smile
