Hi

Moodle is a CMS for sure. In this case a Course Management System. Who told you that Moodle is a Content Management System?

Moodle is a content management system in respect that you can add content via a user interface and manage it.

Well, by that definition any server with the ability to edit/upload is a content management system. What you enter is content, the server manages them.

That said, I became cautious after Marcus has pointed out that different people (like to) understand completely different things under "management". Yes, "environment" is better, and precious. My only worry is the "virtual learning": virtual - not real - pretending?

I've seen Moodle identified as - and used as - all of the above (and yes they are all slightly different - see http://www.slideshare.net/msquareg/cms-lms-lcms as a useful starting point for debating which does what). Whether its appropriate or not is another matter - if all you want is a basic content management system there are much more lightweight solutions around, but (personal opinion) whatever we'd like to see done to make it even better, and whatever we might call it in terminology, there's nothing out there currently that makes a better tool for the core of an online learning environment!
Supplement Moodle with a good Video streaming solution, a good webconferencing package and a few other tools depending on the needs of your institution and call it whatever you want smile

I would suggest that Moodle is a Learning Content Management System, (or LMS). Either is a valid descriptor, but a Content Management System has the connotation of a shell for a great variety of web applications, like Alfresco, Joomla or Drupal. The definition I have from Google is:

A content management system (CMS) is a system used to manage the content of a Web site. Typically, a CMS consists of two elements: the content management application (CMA) and the content delivery application (CDA).

I would argue there is a bit left off there, and that bit is the difference between Alfresco, Joomla or Drupal and Moodle. Moodle might meet the technical criteria as a CMS, (it is both a CMA and a CDA), the specific nature of Moodle does not allow for extensible application development within its shell whereas Alfresco, Joomla and Drupal do.  There are a number of other CMS' but I have never seen Moodle listed amongst them.

Once you get past that, and look at Moodle as a learning tool, you can appreciate the basic power of it, what you can do with it, how your teachers/trainers/lecturers/etc can develop concise materials in it, how your users can respond to it.

I like the term Virtual Learning Environment partly because it doesn't contain the word management. The design of Moodle does not emphasise its benefits to managers but to students and teachers. I know that the word management can be used in the more practical context of simply managing things rather than the job role, but I like the distinction in this context.
