applying style to site

I hope this reaches someone that can help me.  I'm brand new to Moodle and growing increasingly frustrated.

From what I understand, the site should look like this:

But when I log into my site, it looks like this:

If I go to:

Site Administration

     Appearance

            Theme Settings

I can click on Theme Designer Mode and it will display the course in a way that I would expect, but all of my admin tools are greyed out

As soon as I uncheck Designer Mode, I have access to Admin Tools, but the theme/skin goes away.

HELP?!?!

Thank you!!

As your screenshots aren't actually in your post this is a wild stab in the dark but check Slash Arguments.

I'll check that out, Just H. For reference, I've attached snips of what I'm talking about.  The mt_orange image comes from a Moodle sample course and the cals_home illustrates what my view actually is.

I'm running 2.5.9 (Build: 20141110)

Thanks again.
