I'm sorry for these silly or naive tricks to get a downloadable list of participants and groups but I can't find different ways to get it... roșeață

In order to download a list of participants/members of a group, we usually suggest to export the excel spreadsheet from the grader report. Teachers select a group from the dropdown menu in the "Grader report", click on "Export" and then on "Excel spreadsheet", deselect all the grade items included in the export file and repeat this procedure for each group.

Yesterday I found out that, to get a spreadsheet with the full list of participants and their groups, we can create a fake Choice activity (not available/hidden from students), click on "View 0 responses" link and then click on the button "Download in Excel Format".

With this procedure teachers get a spreadsheet with the default columns "Surname", "First name", "ID number", "Group", "Choice". Teachers need only to cancel the last column and they have a full list of participants and groups.

My question is: is there a more direct or smart way to get these data (participants and groups) downloadable?

I don't know where to download it. But when I need a report of 'Students in Groups':

Course > Administration > Users > Groups

There 3 tabs in this page, click the last tab 'Overview'.

You can select the table area and copy it into a Spreadsheet.

Thank you, it could be useful to have here in the tab "Overview" a Download button indeed.

I think that the downloadable spreadsheet that we get from the "fake" Choice activity sounds like an odd solution but now I can't actually see a different choice; in some of our courses, groups have about 300 members.

Thank you for suggesting this way to acquire a list of course participants and their group membership. I have spent ages trying to discover a way of doing this in Moodle 2.8. There is a Tracker thing MDL-40367 : The Grader Report does not filter activities by group from way back in June 2013 which is labelled as Major bug but still Unresolved (and not addressed in v3.0 as far as I am aware). You (and others) might want to vote for this to be fixed in v3.1.

I confirm that the only way of getting a clear list of participants by groups is the "fake" choice activity, or, at least, I've not found or heard other ways till now...
