Hi,

I know this has been discussed on another thread but I have tried what was suggested on there and it did not work!

I am trying to edit Moodle 2.6 so that a students can not edit their first name or surname once an account has been created for them.

Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

Thanks

Hi Mike,

You can lock profile fields in Site administration > Plugins > Authentication > Manual accounts (or choose a different authentication).

With kind regards,

Hartmut

have you try it with your account? you have to login as a normal user, no manager or admin (these user still can edit there names)

look at the url when there is editadvanced.php you are login as an admin or manager.

I have asked a student to test it who has a student account and they can still edit their name

You are definitely on Moodle 2.6? I ask because there has been a recent bug (just fixed) whereby users are able to edit their names in their profile even though they should not be able to. See MDL-36987  - but apparently, 2.6 was not affected and so this should not apply to you thoughtful

Just checked and apparently I am using version 2.7.2!!!

I looked at the link you sent thanks but could not see a solution

Do you know if this has been fixed?

Thanks

That is good that you are on 2.7.2 because it means we have solved your mystery.  If you look back at the tracker link MDL-36987 it says it has been fixed for Moodle 2.7.3, the version after yours. Is it a possibility that you can upgrade?

obvious I know, but when tracker items are made...wouldn't it be a better idea to fix the first version (in the associated banding...so 2.7-not 2.7.3 first or whatever.....in order to enable those who cannot upgrade immediately, access to the fix.

As it stands, scenario: I am new- have the latest install 2.8.....find a bug or see that students can change stuff, my institution doesn't want them to change, but they can't change that stuff in the next version...but we are only just getting used to the version we have already!  I am trying to illustrate classroom prac and implications....teachers see it as: oh not another change....but we know admins and devs see it as a simple upgrade...so a good thing.  Perceptions can be different dependent on the role/access/knowledge when working with Moodle, I think.

Mike- I am no expert on upgrading - the documentation is here Upgrading although you might wish to do a forum search (and possibly) start a new thread about the specifics of upgrading a minor version (you are on 2.7.2 and wish to upgrade to 2.7.3)

You can fetch the current (2.8) version of the software through wget http://sourceforge.net/projects/moodle/files/Moodle/stable28/moodle-latest-28.tgz

Thanks for this

As the admin for the site, can I update this through site administration?

I don't think so. I think you need server access.

This particular issue was particularly nerve-wrecking for us a while back - when we had the "wrong" version of Moodle 2.6. I think trackers should - if only possible - suggest database  or php fixes to those users who are stuck on older versions and cannot just upgrade their productions sites in the middle of the school year..
