Variable Numeric with Units?

Variable Numeric with Units?

Hi There,

I finally got around to figuring out how to use OU's Variable Numeric question type. I have been using it to make calculated gas problems for chemistry with a limited range for variable values yet with many possibilities within the range. It took me a while but now have a handle on it, I think, after creating several. This is a very neat type with great possibilities for feedback.

Have you ever considered making a Variable Numeric which includes units too? That would be a nice to have.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jamie,

My bad. I should have mentioned that I knew about Variable numeric set with units. The reason that type is unattractive is that the I want a big set which is easy to do with Variable Numeric. Now, if there is a way of simply putting in a large set without have to put each value individually, let me know.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

"Now, if there is a way of simply putting in a large set without have to put each value individually, let me know."

Variable Numeric Set questions basically allow you to do everything you can in a variable numeric question but you can also define more than one 'variant' of a question. If you just want the functionality of the variable numeric question type just fill in the parts of the form for 'variant 1'.

Hi Jamie,

Okay, now I am getting confused. Now I am not sure what I thought a 'variant' was in Variable Numeric Set questions. I thought those were the different values for variable. But now I notice that these variables can calculated too. I missed that when I first looked at these. I thought you just gave a variable a name and then used the variants as the different values.

So I could put  an expression such as this vol=rand_int(50000,99999)/999.9 as the calculated variable and just leave the variants blank? I am a bit confused here. Still not sure what a variant is even looking at the little help bubble.

Thanks,

Jeff

See the second screen shot of a form on this page : http://www.open.edu/openlearnworks/mod/oucontent/view.php?id=52747&section=2.1.3

If you just filled out predefined values for variant 1 then you would only have one question variant essentially you would have a question that functions the same as a variable numeric question type.

Yes. As with the variable numeric question type the value of that variable will then be calculated.

Question variants are the same question but with different sets of predefined value variables.

Have a play with the question types on your Moodle installation, use the question preview feature, hopefully all will become clear to you.
