Essay Q wish: Download responses with feedback alongside

Hi All,

I wish I could download responses to essay question with my feedback response alongside.

In my AP Chemistry class I run a flipped, blended classroom that relies on peer instruction.

I have so-called lecture quizzes where students provide a few short-answers responses to essay questions. I am not looking so much for correct responses but insight into their thinking. The general feedback provides the "official" answer.   I generally do not provide much specific feedback since the general feedback has the answer. But I do where necessary. The last question on every quiz is: "Please tell us briefly what single conceptual point of the reading, lecture, or PowerPoint you found most difficult or confusing. If you did not find any part of it difficult or confusing, please tell us what parts (conceptual) you found most interesting." I respond to every student here. Often students ask great questions or provide great feedback that the whole class could benefit from.  Their response inform my teaching greatly. I often download their response to make sure I address issues in classes. I wish my feedback could be downloaded alongside. If I could I might even post the good ones with my responses. It is a lot of work to dig mine out and match. Too much work.

That is why I ask. I ask this every once in awhile to see if any has given thought to this

Using Moodle 2.6.3

*The last question I got from Eric Mazur at Harvard and his Peer Instruction approach.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Here is a suggestion.

You write "Often students ask great questions or provide great feedback that the whole class could benefit from." Well, a forum activity would provide exactly that media for the benefit of all, don't you think?

You could "attach" to each quiz a corresponding Forum activity where students could post their "last question" answer. All students would then be able to see their peers' answers, together with the teacher's feedback, etc.

You could set up the "quiz01 forum" Restrict Access so that it will not show up for the student until they have completed the quiz. And you could provide a direct link to the forum in the Quiz's Overall feedback page.

Hi Joseph,

<<<Well, a forum activity would provide exactly that media for the benefit of all, don't you think?>>>

Yes, I can see that.

I love the aspect that I get to see every student raise their hand in the "Please tell us..." question. There is an implied contract, however,  that I keep their responses private so that it is a very safe, private environment. I think because of this they are more likely to open up to me. I am pretty sure many would be hesitant to ask or indicate their uncomfortableness with some new concepts for fear of being laughed at. I want them to feel secure.

<<<You could "attach" to each quiz a corresponding Forum activity where students could post their "last question" answer.>>>

Despite my reservations I am game to try something like this even if I do not use it for this specific purpose. How would I "attach" ?

Thanks for the prompt reply and new idea,

Jeff

1.- The problem is that you want the student's response to be "sometimes private" and "sometimes visible by the peers". You can't have the best of both worlds!

2.- Another Moodle tool that you could use is the Glossary. If you set it so that students can enter their own "definitions", but submitted to approval, and comments allowed, then you could sort of achieve what you want. But it would be complicated for the students.

3.- By "attach" I mean just what I described, i.e. at the end of quiz01 you put a link to "quiz01forum". You set quiz01 Activity completion condition to "Student must receive a grade to complete this activity". You set "quiz01forum" Access restriction to "Activity completion Quiz01 Must be marked complete".

You can achieve this "attachment" behaviour in most Moodle activities in recent versions.
