Reposting a course

Reposting a course

Hi,

I'm looking for some guidance on best practices for re-offering a course.  Our system is on 2.6.1

Currently we need to setup each course monthly due to how credits are processed.

We use the Weekly Format, setup 12 (or however many are needed to complete the year) and set them all up to show at the beginning of the month and end on the last day of the month.  We set a separate "CEH" number on each quiz to award the appropriate months continuing education.  Unfortunately this method is incredibly time consuming.

I've attached a screen shot of one of our courses as a reference.

Can anyone suggest a better way to re-create monthly courses?

Thank You,

Jon

Jon, maybe using one course and cohorts for each month?

Thank you for the suggestion.  I will need to research more into cohorts...  I'm not real familiar with them.

Jon,

Not to be unsympathetic, but it's not clear to me what is so much work.

Are you manually creating a new course from scratch each month? If so, you can use backup and restore to make a new course each month, assuming the content of the previous course remains the same.

I'm guessing that inside each course is 12 months, or maybe if It's February, 11 months?

If yes, I would make one course with all the 12 months of material. Then back it up. Each month, your restore to create a new course. Then you hide whichever months you don't want visible.

Sorry if I've entirely misunderstood.

Our system, as I'm sure many others are, is very slim on resources.  I am the single IT support for a system with roughly 7500 users.  We use the system as a statewide continuing education system for EMTs and Paramedics.  We are not setup like a traditional institution where we parse out course responsibility to teachers.  The way we track education hours needs to be done on a monthly basis so I am basically doing a year end reset monthly On 20+ courses...

The setup currently is 20 courses each with 12 "weeks" setup to be visible for their respective months.  This allows me to preset the quiz ID for that months CEH credit.  On the first the next offering opens up for autoenrol.  Once it is setup it will work but it makes it cumbersome and added work with each piece of content added.

Not to sound like I'm whining here, just looking for some options and hopefully some automation. I appreciate any responses and will definitely look into any suggestions.

Thank you,

Jon

I think the problem is the date-dependency of your set up.

It's easy to run numerous groups within one course and over a period of time (roll on - roll off), but then you can't use dates anywhere in the course setup, as they can't be set differently for different groups. I use separate groups in a 'topic' format but lose the functionality of activity availability and deadline dates, for instance.

My best suggestion is to scour your course and reduce the 'dates' dependent things to the absolute minimum. For instance, you could use 'completion' settings so that a section only opens when the student has done a quiz or other activity.

You'll still be stuck with copy/restore and tinkering with the settings, but it might not take quite so long.
