Elegance Theme Released

Elegance LogoAfter lots of hard work I am happy to say that Elegance is finally ready for release.

This is my follow up theme to Essential and I hope you like it. Just like Essential, it aims to bring a modern and clean look to Moodle while also allowing for a large degree of customisation.

You can grab it from the plugins DB here: https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=theme_elegance  (now approved)

Or you can grab it directly from GitHub here: http://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance

You can see it in action here: http://2014.imoot.org

I hope to have a walkthrough video uploaded very soon.

What is Elegance?

Elegance is a 2 column, clean and highly customisable theme built on the Bootstrap 3 framework. Like Essential before it, it is full of a wide range of settings to allow you to customise the theme to meet your exact needs.

This theme IS NOT using the Bootstrap base theme in Moodle. Instead it is using a newly created Bootstrap3 framework created by Bas Brands. While I hope Bootstrap3 will make it into Moodle core soon, for this theme I just could not wait!

Some of the highlights include:

  • Customisable User Menu. You can set which links appear and even add your own for services like Webmail. Also note that Messages also show in the header.

User Menu

  • You can set the transparency level for some fantastic effects while using background images

Transparency

  • The MyPage has been customised to be more visual (assuming you are using the new Course Files feature in course settings)

MyMoodle

  • The theme now has a loading indicator so you know when the page has finished loading.

Loading Indicator

  • The frontage has a wealth of options including sliders, marketing spots and Quick Links section. Even a place to add your own block in the middle.

iMoot Sample

  • A gorgeous login screen that allows for a single or a dynamic slideshow of background images
    Login
  • New way of displaying course resources and files. I like to call it "course tiles"

Course Tiles

  • Social Networking built right in.

Social Networking

  • I could go on......but I won't. You have to explore yourself. Let's just say there should be enough settings for your every need.

Settings

I hope you enjoy this release and look forward to your comments and feedback below.

To really show how dynamic this theme is I have included a screenshot below of my test site after I have just made a few theme settings changes.

I always wanted to make a "Wood" theme for Moodle 2.6. Wood was the first theme I ever used back in 1.6 and therefore has fond memories for me. So here is my homage to that quintessential theme of plywood. This is the same code as what is powering the http://2014.imoot.org site. Looks very different doesn't it? 微笑

The top one is the custom menu bar - you set it (as in all other themes) in the Administration > Site Administration > Appearance > Themes > Theme Settings page

The lower one is just a block area - add the block you want to your page, html, rss, latest news, calendar or whatever other block you want, and then drag it into that space.

In the Elegance theme I see that you have the side blocks on the right. Are there any side blocks on the right actually present? Or is it an empty page?

I am only asking as that side block area is not present in the Archaus theme.

If there are no sideblocks then this is becasue the CSS is missing for when a side block region exists but is empty. If it is full then the size of the main area is approx 77% and side blocks 23% whereas if the sideblock is empty then the layout needs to be 100%.

It looks like this is what is causing this problem.

Hi Mary,

RE: Why is it that you need to update your course formats to fit in with a new theme?

Because Elegance has its own version of the section page when you view a course in 'One section per page'.

Elegance overrides the 'print_single_section_page' method in 'course/format/renderer.php' -> https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/renderers/core_renderer.php#L729.  And was the the first theme to do this.  As my formats have settings they needed to be loaded privately in the constructor https://github.com/gjb2048/moodle-format_topcoll/blob/MOODLE_26/renderer.php#L62 instead of the 'print_multiple_section_page' method etc.  As when they where a coding fault was detected as the settings were null.  As they were 'private' I could not make a call in the 'Elegance' theme to rectify the issue.  So came up with a solution in the course format instead.  Hence the update.

Original description on https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=251492#p1095540.

All very complex for what is in fact a one line solution.

Gareth

Are you planning to keep up to date with Bas's improvements? I'd like to make use of both his Bootstrap 3 stuff and your customisation options, so it would be easier for me if I could just direct the changes to the relevant place rather than duplicate them.

Talking of which, do you have a preferred venue for bug reports? You've got a github but I think you had a place in Jira for Essential?

Here's one while I'm here, the front page appears to be missing a .row to contain the two grid columns. But it's present elsewhere, e.g. inside a course. I thought this was the cause of some oddness when the responsiveness kicks in but I think it's actually more to do with the white background colour being attached to the grid column rather than a div within it. This means the left and right padding are different between the div#main-region and the aside#block-region-side-post, the latter applies the background color to the div.blocks within the grid column so you still get the padding either side on phones.

In the same area on the front page you have two div#page-contents as well.

Not wanting to dampen your enthusiasm for the pretty work here but by not basing it on the Bootstrapbase theme in Moodle (which is the one all core and plugin developers are building for and testing with) you are running the risk of many more visual bugs cropping up around the place.

This may increase your support load for this theme.

Web technology doesn't stand still and there's lots of exciting new technologies coming down the pipeline, and new best practices to adopt as people get more familiar with building websites for phones and tablets. Having nearly the entire web development community contributing and testing these things out together is an amazing "force multiplier".

I'm not sure i'd describe Bootstrap 2.3 -> 3 as a "complete change of direction" though, more an "easily manageable transition to a newer version with several major benefits" so another one of those would be welcome, I think.

I am beginning to think that perhaps Bootstrap 2 was not the ideal framework to have embarked on, however, I do think that Bootstrap 3 is far better and worth the extra work to shift to it. As with most things in software, nothing is ever finished to the point of total perfection.  There is very little that is perfect unless it is simple.  Such as the state transition diagrams for the TCP, UDP and IP protocols for example.

I don't think the move to Bootstrap 2 was a bad decision.  It has opened a new door to another way of thinking.  It has caused theme design in Moodle to expand and ultimately support multiple devices in a way that the MyMobile theme was not.  It allows the concept of a single responsive theme bringing consistency in the user experience whatever device they access their Moodle upon.

If the Essential theme being based upon Bootstrap 2 was a bad decision then just look at the download statistics.  I'm sure that Elegance will equal and indeed outstrip the already impressive figures.

Just a quick question regarding the dynamic menu My Courses (that is present in Rocket and Essential). How would I add this to the theme? It is a feature that our lecturers have come to rely on. They wouldn't have the faintest idea how to use the My Page/Dashboard/Home.

Hi Hartmut,

Yes slightly different. What I would like is a part to the drop down menu where the courses that a user has been enrolled on will automatically appear. So e.g. if I log in (and have been enrolled onto courses z and y), part of the custom menu will automatically create a drop down with the courses x and y in it. For another user it will pull the courses they are enrolled on etc.

Julian has this feature in Rocket (with course short names in the drop down) and Essential (with actual course names).

So I am looking for the code which to add to this theme to achieve the same thing.

If I understand you correctly, you would like to see all "my" courses in the custom menu either when you hover over "My Courses" or when you click on "My courses." I don't know to change the display of the custom menu from "click to expand" to "hover to expand" nor do I know whether all "My courses" will be shown by just hovering over "My courses." Like you I am used to hover over a menu item.

Hi All,

At this time I don't plan on building the dynamic courses list into this theme. That screenshot really highlights why. It can get out of control very fast.

This theme instead focuses on making the MyMoodle page more appealing to use. I know this won't please everyone. Of course you can still use Rocket, Essential or other themes that still have that functionality if you need it.

In short, every theme cant have all functionality. Otherwise they all just become the same. So, in this instance, it was an intentional decision to leave it out.

I use bitnami-moodle-2.6-0-windows-installer in Windows 8 for my local installation, updated Moodle to version 2.6.2 (Build: 20140310). Elegance version is 2.6.1 (Build: 20140311).

As Simon Allison reported a theme designer issue HERE, the issue may not be caused by a particular theme, but by the (local) server. Unfortunately, I cannot test Elegance on our server where our production site is running.

Hi Richard and Hartmut,

The change I made to CT and other formats for Elegance was small: https://github.com/gjb2048/moodle-format_topcoll/commit/820b11ca83b2ac7de1c1a904dad158c58b8d65e4.  It was released on the 20th February when Elegance was put on Moodle.org.

The fix is server side and nothing to do with the CSS.  It just makes it work with the overridden renderer for single section course layouts in Elegance: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/commit/deafc650378d5f2091b1664d9af64a9a68dfb700 which I worked with Juilan to make work.

I would be gob smacked if had anything to do with the caching CSS issue.

this is working with most of the moddle sections, courses, categories, etc.., and to translate the custom menu i´m using the Item|Language only item|en  and this work good too.

My problem is when trying to translate for example the fields for the quick links titles in the home page, front page content section and some others template´s section

I think one of the most interesting features of this theme is the tiled layout which kind of builds on the idea behind the grid layout.

I have not delved into how you did this, but would it be possible to do this in a course format plugin?

I was thinking recently it would be nice if you could attach images to activities and resources and display them more like grid handles sections Or how Moodle now adds images to courses in category listings. Ideally you would want to be able to set display options in the resource or activity settings for more control.

All pie in the sky, never the less your tile layout is an interesting step in that direction, no more scroll of death 微笑

Hi Jez,

There are lots of course formats (https://moodle.org/plugins/browse.php?list=category&id=19) that already operate a tiled form of structure, such as the 'Masonry topics format'.  Also, Collapsed Topics and Columns offer multiple columns to facilitate more sections per row.

Also, the theme already uses course format code in an overridden nature - https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/renderers/core_renderer.php#L552 - so could be made into a course format with the right extracted CSS.

Mary, I think I agree with your point that most plugins shouldn't be themeing themselves, they should fit in with Moodle by using standard conventions.

Though like with the core styles, the first step should probably be to delete all the broken, duplicate, contradictory, unnecessary, outdated, non-mobile friendly and/or simply ugly CSS so that we can get a clear idea about what's left to be done.

This might be a useful tool for this process as you can, instead of deleting these lines, simply move them to a style_base.css so that "legacy" themes remain unchanged but modern themes can only inherit the actually useful styles.

Oh, and there's also work being done or server-based LESS compilation, which seems to be working in the same space as this, and might (at least in very hopefuly theory) simplify the styles that plugins need to write.

Two new questions I am looking to find help for:

1. Front page blocks with scroll bars. I have added a block to the front page left hand side. It appears with scroll bars. How can I remove them? (see image attached, problem highlighted in yellow)

2. "My Home" - page. Can the My Courses section be disabled or hidden somehow? The reasons for asking are twofold. Firstly, the delay for the image to fly out and be replaced with the course name and enter box can be irritating if a user needs to access courses quickly. I can see this becoming an issue for our users who are not known for their patience. (Although I like the visual element this section provides.) Secondly and more seriously, with long course names the enter box disappears (is pushed below) and the course becomes inaccessible from that point.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Anu,

I will look into the blocks for you. I have not seen this behaviour on my own sites so not sure what is causing it for you yet.

No, you cannot disable the myCourses. It is part of the design. You can go through and edit the code to remove it if you like. Please note that every time you update the theme you would have to repeat this process and I cannot help you with other unintended side effects should you choose to do so.

The thing about themes is that each bring their own ideas to the table. I can't make a theme everyone will like. I instead make one that I will like and hope others feel the same. Does not mean it is the right theme for everyone.

This is: Moodle 2.6 (Build: 20131118)

It is installed through Softaculous in a shared hosting environnement run by an internet services provider (on a CentOS i guess), and running for 2 months now without problem.

Lots of plugins installed (like this Quickmail which throws messages in debugging mode), especially because I am running connectist types of small MOOCs on the system. Maybe a conflict or interference between Elegance and some of these plugins ?

On the same Moodle installation about 10 courses using various themes, including Standard, Clean, Simple, Essential (all running well) and now testing to add Elegance for a new course, take this time from the plugins repositor of Moodle.org.

Some weeks ago I installed a previous build of Elegance, from Github. I had similar problems that I reported in the forum (it was another thread announcing Elegance). Someone there wrote that the problem was corrected.

The behaviour is strange, this time and last time (previous build) too: I install Elegance, no errors and everything seems ok after playing about an hour, during which I makevarious parameterizations of the theme (colours, ...) leading to great hopes with this great theme. The day after when I want to view again my course, there's no more access to it, and no more access duing the next days too. That's the scenario that happened now 2 times, now with this latest build and earlier with the previous one.

I totally understand why Julian wouldn't want to take this out of the theme; it's a big part of the vision of the thing, and I think it'd work great with some content. But my users are like yours and I've already gotten some mails about it. Also, like your course names, mine are too long to show up right.

All you have to do to remove My Courses is comment out that section of my.php. The Course Overview block moves up, and no one is the wiser. I definitely miss having the "All Courses" button right there, but maybe I'll fiddle with that.

The code you're looking for is this:

                           <h2 >My Courses</h2>
                    </div>
                </div>
                <div class="content">
                    <div class="mycourseboxes">
                        <?php
                            echo $OUTPUT->mycourses($CFG,$sidebar);
                        ?>
                    </div>
                </div>
            </div>

--Just comment that out in the HTML and your users won't bug you.

There was no way I was going to give up on the Elegance theme, though. I've put a bunch of time into tweaking my site to look good in it. The login screen (the first thing people see in my case) is worth any other minor hassles I've had, which are few, because Julian is unbelievably present here!

#block-region-side-middle .content { overflow: hidden; height: auto;}

You can add the above CSS to Elegance's General Settings page in the designated Custom CSS box. You can add a value for height if you prefer.

For Example:

#block-region-side-middle .content { overflow: hidden; height: 250px;}

Should fix it if not let me know.

Ben,

open Elegance folder, go to STYLE folder, and open file elegance.css

go to line 1506 (should be around that number)

find the code below

#block-region-side-middle .block .content {
    height: 220px;
    overflow-y: auto;
    overflow-x: hidden;
    padding: 5px 0px;

Change the value in overflow-y: to auto; (as shown)

save the file, and you may have to purge theme cache.

alternatively, you can add to the theme CSS these values

#block-region-side-middle .block .content {overflow-y: auto;}

Ben, I couldn't get my head around imagining the issue you are having on Android,  I know it would be hard for you to attach a screen shot out of android capture as well. Besides, even if you can, getting around slide show in Elegance may not be something that can be easy fix (Mary may be able to assist more due to her skills)

Just to ask, have you alternatively tried Essential theme? the reason for mentioning Essential was its status being up-to-date as when compared to Elegance, while elegance may not have been tested on multiple platforms, I am sure Essential is and there is option of turning off slide shows on mobile devices too, whilst not in Elegance. I know Elegance is as awesome as Essential is (I am using Elegance on all my projects) as both were initially created by same person, but if I see Essential now, its way better than when it came out initially.

Elegance (imo) is a massive leap forward in terms of being able to get a more normal website feel to the landing page. I know this shouldnt be a priority but I am trying to see the site through the eyes of a user.

I'll try and get a screenshot of the android view of the slideshow later (somehow) and see if anyone has any ideas.

Ben, you're at the right forum/post for Elegance's issues, normally you've got plenty replies regarding your issues right away, but considering Christmas just passed and new year a day away, so most of the forum mods are away to return within few days to assist you further. You should have seen some examples build upon Essential as well to get a good taste of how well a moodle can be built upon that, it was actually essential that changed the whole idea of Moodle not looking like moodle, in fact if I have to tell, many of the premium themes are build upon Essential (Essential Gourmet is one of them for $89 I believe).

It just gave me an idea of Moodle Showcase link, where one can actually view and get ideas of how well a moodle site can be built 微笑

Hi Ben,

If you are looking for help setting up your course, as well as getting to grips with MOODLE, you would be better talking to Mary Cooch., who can point you in the right direction.

One pount to remember that ALL the changes you make to Moodle that are not theme related, like setting up a course, creating groups, adding course content ect., is held in Moodle so does not matter which theme you use for Admin work, so to stop you getting distracted, you may find it easier and less painful if you switched to Clean Theme to do all the Admin work. Once that is done then you can make it look pretty in Essential.

Remember too that for all the areas that you struggle to get your head around, such as the Admin settings, roles and permissions et al, you will find Moodle Docs on the subjects. Just be sure to select the correct Moodle version as these can differ slightly From one version to another.

Keep asking questions here as we can all help you, and if necessary move your question to amother forum.

According to the stack trace you posted, you're hitting the same bug that I mentioned earlier.

If you have access to the server you could try making this change to the file mentioned in your error message:

edit: I see a picture of this change is posted above, too.

But, as far as my experience goes, this bug does not result in a white/blank page. It all works fine before you log in, and then (if you happen to have a message waiting for you that doesn't have a sender) you'll get the coding error warning.

If you have access to the server you should be able to switch the theme from the command line, though to be honest I don't know how.

You can hardcode some setting in the config.php but a quick google doesn't turn up the format that you'd need to use to change the theme (if you can).

I just tried this in config.php and it worked (though only after I logged out, but that might be because I use session themes while developing, if you can't log out, try accessing your site from a browser you've not used for a while)

$CFG->theme = 'arialist';

Re: Elegance Theme Released

Paul Wood發表於

Hi David,

The problem was unrelated to the Elegance theme.  When I got the 'coding error' prompt I pressed the back button (originally thought I didn't do this but I did!) and chose the Decaf theme.  I contacted our hosting provider who told me there was an issue with this theme and this was what was preventing the site from being accessed (Internal Server Error 500).  This is the error:

Fatal error: require_once(): Cannot redeclare class decaf_expand_navigation in /u0/webroot/virtual/MYSITEURL/www/theme/decaf/layout/frontpage.php on line 3

Seems like there was a recent update to the Decaf theme and this caused the fatal error when choosing the theme from the Theme Selector page.

All back up and running now! Loving the Elegance theme!

Grab the latest copy from Github (as I only added this today for you)

Once you have it, open up layout/login.php and you will need to uncomment line 338

I suspect Mary's suggestion was more along the lines of - if you look at that theme, which is built in a simpler way as it doesn't try to do as much, you might get some clues to help make it work on your theme based on Elegance, rather than suggesting you rebuild your theme based on that one 微笑

Hi Nick, I am not telling you to abandon the changes you are making to Elegance theme, I am just pointing out that if you uploaded the Oauth2 Easy theme you could test that out and your Elegance theme would not be affected.

To install the plugin, as this seems, if I am not mistaken, to be the point where you are struggling the most,  you need to first download Oauth2 plugin from...

https://moodle.org/plugins/pluginversions.php?plugin=auth_googleoauth2

then extract the 'googleoauth2' folder from the zip file and place it inside the moodle/auth directory on your Moodle server, which should give you...

If you are already logged in when you are adding the plugin then by refreshing your screen and going to Site Administration > Notifications you will be directed to Install the plugin in the Check plugins page.

Once done and providing you have Elegance set up correctly, and also set it as the default theme for your moodle site, the next time you try to login you will be able to use your Google id or whatever other id you intend using.

I hope that helps?

- as you see in the attachment the marketing spot don't fill the whole width. how can I solve it?

- when I  define the pictures for the marketing spot I can't upload a picture in the editor. I can only insert a link. Are there special reasons for that?

The marketing spots are designed to only take half the page.  You can insert and html block (or any block) in the other half.    They are also designed for a short blurb rather than a lot of detail.  I am not sure why we cannot put an actual picture in there unless it is linked to.  I have found a way around that is to add the main menu block to the front page, add the picture there as a file resource, then use that link in the marketing spot or front page content area.  Then  you delete the main block.  The links still stay valid but you don't have to have the Main Menu block showing on the front page.

If you want something similar to span the whole page, try the Quick Links.

Peter Dekker發表於

First of all Julian: thanks for a wonderful theme! It's great looking and its release coincided with my development of a new moodle site so I took the chance of using and testing it immediately. It's good to have the theme available in the community so people can start using it and test it in different environments. That will lead to suggestions to further tweak the theme to perfection.

I have noticed a few items that could use some improvement:

1. The aspect ratio of the slideshow on a tablet differs from that on a PC/Mac in the sense that it is relatively higher. With an image that fits perfectly on the desktop computer, that image is repeated vertically on a tablet (iPad).

2. I have seen the same issue reported earlier with report tables strechting outside of the body and underneath the right column. It was suggested to edit the custom.css in the elegance theme but I can find no custom.css there.

3. When showing a list of questions (/question/edit.php), there is in my opinion too much whitespace between the question select checkbox and the question pictogram. The checkboxes are positioned a little too high (firefox, chrome), making their top invisible.

4. When viewing a question bank (/mod/quiz/edit.php), the bank is presented in a small column covering approx 1/3rd of the body width (this may be a Moodle thing rather than a template thing, I have no previous experience with Moodle). Apart from aesthetic reasons, this in addition to the white space mentioned in the previous point, makes the short question text extremely short and therefore identification difficult. I think I'd rather have the question bank list over the entire body width.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Mary, I found some answers to the question table issues. I added to Custom CSS (now I know how 眨眼) the following:

/* to lower the checkbox so it is completely visible */
radio input[type="radio"], .radio-inline input[type="radio"], .checkbox input[type="checkbox"], .checkbox-inline input[type="checkbox"] {
    margin-top: 5px;
}
/* to left-adjust the table columns and content*/
table#categoryquestions {
    display: inline;
}
#categoryquestions .header {
  text-align: left;
}
/* to correct the repository list width for the earlier inline statement */
#page-mod-quiz-edit div.container div.generalbox {
    overflow: auto;
}

/* to correct table width of grade report */
.gradetreebox {
    overflow:auto;
}

I just hope this doesn't screw up other instances.....

Also found a solution to the question bank positioningThe first item is a change to the ' auto' setting suggested in the previous post.

/* to correct the repository list width  */
#page-mod-quiz-edit div.container div.generalbox {
    overflow: hidden;
}
/* to reposition question bank, will appear on top since it's the first block item defined in html */
#page-mod-quiz-edit div.quizcontents {
width: 100%;
}
.questionbankwindow.block {
 width: 100%;
}
#page-mod-quiz-edit .modulespecificbuttonscontainer {
    width: 400px;

Still need to work on the first issue: aspect ratio of slideshow on tablet.

And...so far this is the BEST Moodle theme I've used. It's got some bugs, but I'm sure over time that'll be fixed (I noticed the text editor sometimes doesn't resize correctly).

The big thing I wish this theme had though, was a switch to flip the side bar to the left side instead of the right side. I tried doing it with some CSS overrides but things went won't when I made my browser the width of a phone. Some of our students are a bit older and not used to change, so moving that side bar tends to freak them out and our current theme has it on the left.

Hi,

The Headings for the older themes used <h1> <?php echo $PAGE->heading ?></h1> the content of which varies from page to page. So you could, I suppose, try useing $PAGE->heading in the meta tag?

EDIT: I have just tested this. By adding the following line to the frontpage >head></head> tag ...

    <meta name="content" content="<?php echo $PAGE->heading ?> ">

So depending on the page you surf to within your Moodle site, the page heading will be reflected in the meta tag.

For example:

Frontpage heading gives:   <meta name="content" content="Moodle 2.6">
In a CSS & HTML Course page gives:     <meta name="content" content="CSS & HTML">

If you check the Elegance theme settings for the slideshow, there is a choice between the smaller image and full size (banner) I think the ones I've used are about 1400x280. But the 'best' size for you for a banner image in the slide show may depend on the most common resolution that your users will be veiwing it on - if you're in a computer lab with big monitors, then most of your users may be on 1600px width screens, or an older one with 1024px monitors.

Hi all,

Looking at the code there is provision in the CSS for 30 categories: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/style/categories.css#L162-L280 - however, the setting: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/settings.php#L1329-L1358 and the replacing code: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/lib.php#L104-L113 was written for 20!

Therefore, this: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/settings.php#L1329-L1358 and this: https://github.com/moodleman/moodle-theme_elegance/blob/master/lib.php#L104-L113 needs to be adjusted for 30 categories.

Or, better still it is conceivable for the theme to append the correct custom CSS for an almost infinite number of categories with a little bit of thought.

Cheers,
