Creating roles and assigning them

I am working on a large site that has a lot of visiting tutors.  I would like to keep track of visiting tutor use of the site.  I would also like them to have a role that is similar to but not quite as powerful as the teacher role, for example, i do not want them to automatically see students in groups they are not a member of.

So it seems pretty obvious to me that i should create a role based on the teacher role, removing some of the permissions such as the view all groups one.

I have successfully created these roles, but when i try to test them with groups something weird is happening.  The users with the new roles are showing up as having no roles before they are added to groups but once they are added to groups, the new roles are visible.

i think this is a bug.  has anybody else seen this?

It's quite annoying.

Hi Tina -yes; I've found the same but unfortunately it looks to be something that's not been working for a long while (first reported in 1.9 and then more recently) Here is the original tracker issue  -I suggest you post your recent findings there saying it is still the case in the latest version of Moodle - and start publicising it微笑  MDL-37810

thanks, i have done this,

however, the issue is ranked as not of high importance, but this is not the case, it has teaching and admin impact, including who gets to see certain types of student data.
