I need to upload a list of users into out moodle site for language testing.  I have the list of users, passwords, etc in an .xlsx document at present.  Is there an easy way to import this?  Do the fields have to be something specific?

Please advise.  Time is of the essence.

Mark,

The process is quite easy.  You need a csv file.

See http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Upload_users (for Moodle 2) or http://docs.moodle.org/19/en/Upload_users (for Moodle 1.x).  I think the process is the same for any version.

Moodle 1.8.1 is quite old and not supported anymore.  I would be concerned about security issues.  Do you have plans to update to Moodle 2.3, 2.4 or 2.5?
