Using 1.9.12...and frustrated. Need DUMMY instructions for backing up and upgrading.

First off,  I am a science teacher (NOT a technology person). I am using ntchosting.com as my server as moodle is not offered through my school. I would like to upgrade my moodle so I can have more options in my editing toolbar etc etc.
I have 3 courses I need to back up (can't figure out how to do that) and then I guess I need to do several upgrades to get to the most recent version. I have spent hours reading forums and the ntc hosting personell can only really help from the server side of things. I have no understanding of what SQL, PhP, zip files, data bases are... grrr so frustrating. Is there anyone who can help or who can log in and do it all for me?

Biggest thing is I don't want to loose the courses I have created. These 3 courses are a culmination of a years worth of work for me. Thanks

Hi there! First of all, don't worrysmile I am sure we can help you. There is a jobs section here if you would prefer paid help. To back up your courses, go to each course and then look in the administration block where it says "backup" Click there  -follow the instructions (it should just keep going and ask you to confirm on each screen) Then you will have a backed up course in the backup folder. Click on it to download it to your computer or somewhere else for safekeeping.Do you need to keep all the student information as well? If you don't , and you only need the resources, then I wonder if your host might be able to do you a new installation of Moodle instead of upgrading your current one and then you can restore (ie re-import) your courses into that. It might be easier. I see that they do offer Moodle from their website. If you only have 3 courses and the user data  is not important then getting rid of the old one and making a new one might be better for them and you.

I did the first step.... I did the courseback up like you said, but where do I go to click on it to download it to my computer?

never mind the second time I did it, it took me to a new screen that allowed me to download it as a zip

One of my courses won't back up. Any suggestions. When it gets to the end, this is what I see instead of something that shows a file I can download
