2.1, Enabling date in completion tracking

Is it necessary to enable the date in the completion tracking settings as seen in the attached image, especially as one can't even set a correct date because the years end at 2010? I really don't understand what enabling, or keeping the date disabled, actually does.

Are you absolutely sure you don't have any more years than that? I can't help I am afraid but I am changing the subject of this to reflect the fact that your years end in 2010 when they should go much higher! Mine goes from 1970 to 2020

I'm absolutely sure. It never has gone higher.

Apart from that, though, what is the purpose of the date? When should it be used?
