Intallation 911 for a beginner

Dear sirs:

I am very sorry to be a problem to you, but I am completely illiterate in technical stuff regarding server, SQL, etc and all these things. I am a traditional teacher who is suppossed to begin working in an Moodle online course next year. It's a big promotion. I want to install Moodle in my computer to start familiarizing with it so I won't be completely lost when I begin. I am having real problems to install the server (whatever that is) in my computer following the Instalation Docs. I will be working on a stand-alone basis until I start my job, my computer has Windows 7 Ultimate, 4GB RAM, i3 processor, 64-bit Operating System (I'm just copying). It has a file called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (ENU), Microsoft Net Framework 4, I don't see any PHP thing, and that's all I can imagine that might be of interest for you to know. I use Mozilla Firefox 16.0.2.

I really need a "Dummy-installation-guide" to be able to start using an practicing on Moodle. As a teacher, preparation is basic for me. I will be creating my course, and later working as a teacher using a server that the school is going to buy or set, I don't know.

I find Moodle very useful, from the videos you offer (and youtube) but I need some hand-on. I appreciate very much what you do in favor of the education of people.

Could you plese help me to install a stand-alone Moodle?

Thank you very much

Hi there. If you click this link you will get to an "all in one" package for downloading and installing Moodle onto your Windows 7 laptop http://download.moodle.org/windows/ You don't need to know any PHP (I don't) You download it, unzip it and follow the instructions. I have managed to do it on my laptop so I am sure you can toosmile Once you have downloaded it and unzipped it, if you need more help, please post.

Also- Moodle has a test site here demo.moodle.net that you can practise with. It gets wiped clean every hour so if you make a course you'd have to download it to save it. There is also the school.demo.moodle.net which lets you see examples of real Moodle courses with students interacting to give you some ideas.

Hi Mary:

That's what I did. I did it again and when I open the browserand type the localhost it gives me this:

HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found.

And then I cannot go further

Thank you anyway.

Victor, well done on getting the job, you should enjoy Moodle.

I'd advise you if you can to check out the version of Moodle you will be using next.  It makes a big difference if it is still way back in the past (version 1.9) or more recent 2.0, 2.1, 2.3.  In fact, are you sure you can't get an account and a course there now?

The benefit of working on a local machine is that it is often a little faster.  The downside is that you are on your own and no-one can help you.

You may be able to get help from a computer literate friend in installing Moodle.  But I do agree with Mary, it should be a painless process.

To be just a little more specific, you have read http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Complete_install_packages_for_Windowsand followed each step????

If you want, there are other places on the net that are not like the demo that wipes every hour where you can get a Moodle sandbox to play with for free.

Good luck.

Thanks for the advice Derek, I appreciate it. I installed both; the 1.9 and the 2.3 versions of Moodle. In separate folders as suggested,  I followed all the instructions as stated there and the same always appear when I open the browser and type the http://localhost/ or the IP address of my computer: "HTTP Error 404. The requested resource is not found."

I know I can work in the moodle site, but the idea is to keep what I do in my computer and maybe use some or all of that stuff once I start, while in the Moodle sandbox it is erased every hour. Let's see if someone can help me in solving the "resourse not found" stuff.

Thank you anyway, Derek

Victor

The fact that you are getting the HTTP Error implies that your web server is running and is not blocked in any way. The resource not found implies that the web server is pointing to the wrong directory.

I tend to run the XAMPP system which installs everything except moodle and as a result I get a little more help (e.g. a web based interface to the MySQL database).

I have been doing things on the web since before it had pictures but I still find setting up a server confusing on occasions.

Just as a wild guess, have you tried typing in localhost/moodle as opposed to just localhost?

Thank you all. I already solved my problem. I just follow this video and everything started and functioned right. Good for this young man.
