Hi Everyone

We are going to upgrade our moodle environment to 2.3 but have been told by other parties that we are best upgrading to 2.2 instead. Which one would be best for us to upgrade and why? Many thanks

you have to upgrade to 2.2 before you upgrade to 2.3 but if you meet all the correct tech requirements then 2.3 is better.

Hi Mary

Thank you so much for your reply. Why would this be then? What tech requirements are needed to go straight onto 2.3? If we did 2.2 first could we upgrade staright onto 2.3? Could you give some reasons. I really appreciate your help. Many thanks

Hi Daniel.

At the risk of this being old news: you have to upgrade your current Moodle to 2.2 before you can upgrade to 2.3.

Some useful information about that process here: http://www.nathankowald.com/blog/2012/06/upgrading-to-moodle-2-3/.

I assume the upgrade path is required because of the database structure, but I haven't been able to verify that.

There's also a note you should read on the Moodle 2.3 upgrade docs on moodle.org: http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Upgrading - it's under "Possible issues that may affect you in Moodle 2.3".

My experience with 2.3 has been really positive so far - especially the drag-and-drop upload and the new Assignments module (from a development point of view, this new module is a lot easier to code for).  There's an older blog post about the features here: http://www.somerandomthoughts.com/blog/2012/05/23/some-features-in-the-upcoming-moodle-2-3/ and also summarised in the release notes here: http://docs.moodle.org/dev/Moodle_2.3_release_notes.

Another point is support: 2.2 core bug fixes end in December this year (and serious bug fixes in June next year) whereas 2.3 gives you an extra six months for both.
