Unable to Scroll down in quiz - HELP

Unable to Scroll down in quiz - HELP

We have just recently upgraded to Moodle 2.2 and when running a quiz as a student to test out the Quiz module I am unable to scroll down the page at all.  I tried doing it in Internet Explorer and Firefox and it was the same in both browsers.

How can I fix this?  I can't really attach a screenshot, it kind of is what it is. I'm just at a complete loss on how this should be fixed.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

Are you using 2.2 or 2.2.2? It looks like you are experiencing MDL-31205.

Moodle 2.4.  new build.

My students are still having this problem.  Safari browsers.  I can't replicate it on my phone or microsoft safari download

I am told that the student ' can't use the scroll bar with the mouse'.  He had to keep going back to the questions menu and clicking on the next set of numbers.  Then he discovered that he could use the up/down arrows on his keyboard to get to the bottom to finish and submit his test.

I don't know if this is the error, but this is the one I see repeated:

[03-Mar-2013 03:53:00 CST6CDT] Default exception handler: Invalid quiz ID Debug:
Error code: invalidquizid
* line 467 of /lib/setuplib.php: moodle_exception thrown
* line 33 of /mod/quiz/attempt.php: call to print_error()

Hi there.  I know this probably is not what you are hoping for as a solution. ...but we (my campus) has found it is best to tell students not to take tests in IE or Safari.  Our actual practice on campus is Firefox is the browser of choice with Chrome being a safe second. My personal experience has always been IE is the worst with Safari having almost an equal amount of problems.  I notify students up front that if they are Apple friendly to not use Safari, at least not during tests.  We have had that 'practice' for a few years easy, IE for even longer.

Having said that, we have discovered that some of our problems have occured from instructors and question creators copying and pasting from WORD documents into tests etc and that 'gibberish' pops up and causing alot of problems.  I have spent alot of time trying to find these "code violations' and usually find it and eliminate it..but still safe to tell students not to use those browsers.

Yes, coy-and-paste from Word is a disater.

(And it is ironic that Firefox can normally manage to desiplay the resulting mess, but Microsoft's own browser chokes on it.)

That error in the PHP logs is completely unrelated to any problems students might have scrolling in their browser.

I use Safari a lot (I am using it now) and I can't think what in the quiz page might be preventing scrolling from working. What an odd error.

Thank you everyone for your comments!  I use Word to write the questions and Respondus to upload. At the end I check the quiz for additional unwanted 'characters'.  I am now warning up front, just in case using the up/down on the keyboard will be needed.  When the students call, I have them write down their answers in case they need to close it up.

Another thought.... has this same problem been replicated on a different computer with Safari?  If not, may need to focus on the computer.  I am sure everyone that belongs to this forum can comment on problems that ended up being a setting or something on the users computer.

We had a couple situations where students were telling us they were getting kicked out of MOODLE, ended up --after some discussion and narrowing it down to specific computers...(drum roll), the students were hitting the back button on the side of the mouse.  We changed the mice in the room to the basic mice..gave the fancy mice to employees smile

Thank you.  I haven't been able to replicate it with Safari on my Apple Iphone, or Safari loaded on a Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.  My students are adults and I have been hearing it repetitively.  Only on Safari.  It is possible that it was fixed on newer Safari browsers because I can't replicate it, but because I keep hearing it, I still need to address it.

Cindy " I use Word to write the questions and Respondus to upload."

You are really looking for trouble.thoughtful Why not simply write your questions in the Moodle questions bank interface?

The tests are 100 questions long and I am managing approx. 30 courses.  I can see all of the questions with a word document.....and it seems like it goes quicker that way.

Hello Cindy,

We understand that with a big number of questions, using a word processor is a lot quicker and easier.

But what we try to tell you is that word is certainly not the best word processor you can use for that task.

This is because the text produced by word contains a lot of unwanted characters and tags that will cause you trouble once imported into Moodle's questions. And it's very difficult to get rid of all these unwanted characters and tags beleive me !

Also a common mistake is not to make sure the text produced by word is correctly encoded using UTF-8. This can produce a lot of unexpected results after import.

In my opinion most likely your problem are caused by characters or tags in some questions that are wrongly interpreted by the browser.

Jean-Michel:  Is there another word processing program that produces more predictable results with the moodle quizzes?

@Cindy,

If using the question bank's own question creating interface is not an option for you, you might consider using the GIFT format.

Hello Cindy and Joseph,

@Joseph,

Cindy has said that she use Respondus to upload the questions so using GIFT would mean she have to change the way she is working, additionally even if I don't use Respondus (which is not free), I believe Respondus have many more features not supported by GIFT, so I don't think we should advocate that Cindy switch from Respondus to GIFT. If she is statisfied with Respondus, why change ?

@Cindy

There are many word processors that can easily produce plain text files encoded as UTF-8 without any garbage (even wordpad included in Windows can do that if you take care of choosing the right file type when saving). I personally use notepad++ (free) and I like it a lot. It is simple, yet powerful. Other Moodle users may suggest alternatives.

@Jean-Michel,

Cindy said "I use Word to write the questions and Respondus to upload."

That looks to me an incredibly convoluted way of writing questions for the Moodle question bank. Why not write the questions directly?
