Requiring/forcing a response for each question in a quiz?

Requiring/forcing a response for each question in a quiz?

Dear All,

Have thus far searched the forums for a similiar query, with disappointing results.  I apologize if this is covered elsewhere.

Is there a way within the Moodle Quiz Module to require a response for each question in a given quiz (e.g. student's must input an answer for each question in a quiz, before being given the next question)?

The description of "deffered feedback" in Quiz settings is:

"Deferred feedback - Students must enter an answer to each question and
then submit the entire quiz, before anything is graded or they get any
Feedback.
"

Yet, in practice students can ignore any given question when deffered feedback is chosen, and still submit the quiz.  Is there a way to make it impossible to submit the quiz/move to the next question without answering each individual question in a quiz?

Appreciate any assistance or guidance with figuring out if forcing answers to quiz questions is feasible in Moodle 2.x.

Thanks!

This feature is not implemented.

If a student does not answer a particular question, they get 0 marks. That is normally enough incentive for them to answer all the questions.

At the end of the quiz, before they submit, they student gets a summary of all the questions and whether they have answered them. That helps prevent students from accidentally forgetting to answer a question.

Building upon Tim's response, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to have this methodology and functionality in place because some quizzes are run in adaptive mode with penalties. If students are forced to answer each question, they would then be penalized for guessing and getting the answer wrong. At least if they skip the question, they only receive a zero on the question and not negative points.

Happy Moodle Logooodling!

No, they would be penalized only for getting the answer wrong which usually is a result of not knowing the correct answer (actually, too often it's a result of poorly constructed questions, but that aside for a moment) which usually is what the assessment assesses.

Whether the student guesses, only the student knows and it is the student's choice but it's not one of the question's choices that the question engine scores. smile

Itamar "Whether the student guesses, only the student knows..."

Well, there must be cases when even the student himself does not know whether he is guessing or not.wink

This surely is a good case for using the CBM behaviour.

Hello, I have the same problem. I need to know how to make  the students answer every single question in the quiz before they can submit it.

Thanks!

On the subject of the reluctance of the developers to implement the OPTION to require questions in a quiz to be answered: I find this to be infuriating. People such as Joseph are not seeing outside the box. I am using the quiz module not with students, but with participants in a program. We are using the quiz module as a survey because it allows customized feedback (which by the way questionnaire should implement). We need every participant to answer every question. Why can't you allow the developer of the quiz to make the adult decision whether they want to require questions to be answered?

It probably wouldn't be very expensive to pay someone to add this feature.

Totally agree, Ron.  I'm amazed at how the developers have approached this.

I've used Moodle for nearly 7 years now, but every new version that's released pushes us towards switching everything over to WordPress...

Perhaps this might be of some help once implemented?  MDL-40990
