Hello all,

I have encountered a strange (at least to me) feature in moodle.

If i (administrator) edits someone's post on a forum, the "edited by" date is wrong...it shows the date when the post was originaly made, and the post originaly made keeps the date of the edit...dont know if im making myself clear..

Lets say there is a post made at 10 am, if i edit it at 10:05, the post stays with the date 10.05, and it says it has been edited by the administrator at 10:00 am...

This happens in different instalations of moodle and both in 1.9 and 2.0, so i start to think its meant to be this way, doesnt make much sense to me though...

Hope for some guidance.

Thank you!

Hi Muff,

Which version of Moodle are you using? It doesn't happen to me on Moode 1.9.14. I know because I did just that several times today and it was all fine.

Cheers,

Glenys

Hello,

I have the same problem in Moodle 2.0.2.

If today (27 January) I edit a post which was made say on the Janyary 20th, after the editing is complete, the "post date" changes to today, i.e. you get:

POST TITLE HERE
by [STUDENT'S NAME HERE] - Friday, 27 January 2012, 12:13 PM

Which is cetrainly not true.

And then at the bottom of the post, you get:

(Edited by [TEACHER'S NAME] - original submission Monday, 23 January 2012, 01:22 AM)

That is a very confusing and incorrect approach.

Is it a problem with my installation or settings or is it the way Moodle is built?

And how can I change this illogical behaviour?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi P H,

It is indeed the way you describe, though I see why you find it confusing. Can you suggest a better way to show edited posts?

Hello Helen,

1. It's no only me. Several of my students who use it are confused by it and I have to explain to them that that's how it works and no, sorry it can't be changed to a "more logical" form.

2. A much better way would be for the sentences to mean what they say. (That's how languages work for most people, you see, with the notable example of the politicians, of course.) So:

If a post was made by a student on Monday the 23rd and edited by the teacher on Friday 27, then:

POST TITLE HERE
by [STUDENT'S NAME HERE] - Monday, 23 January 2012, 12:13 PM

Let me translate. It says:
This post was made by [STUDENT'S NAME HERE] on Monday 23rd, which is sort of true, you see, because the post WAS made on the 23rd.

And then at the bottom of the post, you should have:

(Edited by [TEACHER'S NAME] on 27 January 2012, 01:22 AM

I'll translate this, too:
This post was edited by the  [TEACHER'S NAME] on the 27th, which again is what happened, isn't it?

Maybe there was something lost in translation. big grin

The message can be removed, so it's important (with the way Moodle is currently designed) that the time stamp is updated as a potential flag that th emessage has been edited.

Now it's been raised I can see how the current message may be misleading. I think there's also the issue that subsequent edits record the date of the last edit as the date of the original post. I think I raised this in th tracker c.18 months ago.

So..?

Original post date/time (no need for participant name as that's self evident from the post header) edited by NAME date/time

Apologies for my delay in replying, it's not that I didn't like your reply P H. Your suggestion sounds good to me. smile

I had a look in the Moodle Tracker and found that the issue had already been reported as MDL-10601 so I added a link to this discussion.

Thanks Helen, for some reason I couldn't find that last night.

As mentioned above I have reservations about PH's suggestion. Thinking about this now I feel that none of these suggestions are really resolving the issue.

I don't like the fact that the editor can delete the message. It would be better if the date/time and editor name appeared in the header next to the original post details e.g.

Combining this with a record of edits saved available to Teachers/Admins (I'm told this is in ForumNG would complete the picture.

It's handy being able to delete the edited by message if you make a mistake editing and have to re-edit the post. wink

I also like being able to add the reason for editing the post in the edited by message (as in http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=193140 for example) to satisfy people's curiosity!
