There is an extension for Firefox which adds a little icon on the tool bar which automatically checks for gmail and informs you when you have some. No need to ever go check manually.

Rumor has it that GMail will be doing something with remote feeds so that one will be able to get messages via RSS soon. If this is true that will be an option in obtaining information about new mail. The FF GMail extension is nice but it is only helpful with one account.

If you're interested in Gmail just because of 1GB offer, why don't use gmx.net? You can register yourself at anytime. Knowing Germany to read it fast. Otherwise you can use AltaVista Babel Fish (http://world.altavista.com/) to translate into the language you familiar with.
1GB at your fingertip.

Well, less that three months later and my 1Gb is full (over 53000 messages). 
I had forwarded my three normal email addresses to there as a backup.
Unfortunately you can delete only 100 messages at a time!
I may have to give up on Gmail.
