Hi all,
in the next days "the Univesitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC)" in Barcelona Spain. ( http://www.upc.edu) will anounce the adoption of moodle to support learning activities in all the studies. UPC is a large university ( more than 25.000 students, so I think that's goodn news for all moodlers specilly those who live in Spain and particulary in Catalonia.
By the way shuld I remind you that all teh files adn documentation of the Internalmail module can be found at the internalmail project home page http://www.lsi.upc.edu/~malier
Cheers.

More information about adoption

by Kevin Kelly -
Hi Ludo,

Do you have more information about the UPC decision to adopt Moodle? Specifically:

-- Is this a move from another Learning Management System (LMS), or a new implementation of this type of technology?
-- If it is a move from another LMS, do you have a migration plan that the community can review?
-- If it is a move from another LMS, what was/is the faculty and student reaction?

-- Would you share the adoption process that UPC followed when choosing Moodle?
-- How are faculty involved in the decision making process?
-- What considerations affected the decision (cost, scalability, sustainability, etc.)?

Our own university, San Francisco State University, is investigating a migration from Blackboard to Moodle (http://ilearn.sfsu.edu). (Many in the Moodle community may know Jason Cole, who got us started on this path.) We ran our first test in Fall 2004 with 5 instructors and 300 students. This semester we have 20 instructors and 1500 students (~5% of our student population, from 8 of our 9 colleges).

I would love to see any and all perspectives on the transition from investigation to implementation, since we are approaching that grey area in between the two. So far, I have found only one discussion of this sort, from Dublin City University (see http://odtl.dcu.ie/wp/2004/odtl-2004-01.html).

Thanks,
Kevin

As a grad from SFSU ed. tech. dept. I'd love to talk to you more about what your experiences with Moodle have been so far...

I'm running a K12LTSP lab in my classroom in a public HS in LA, CA.

We use Moodle a lot.

We've a dedicated server but we're experiencing major resource problems with our server/moodle. How is moodle scaling for you? What's your hardware?

I'd appreciate any time you may have to describe your experiences so far!

best!

Hi Kevin, sorry for the delay in anwering ... lets get to it:

-- Is this a move from another Learning Management System (LMS), or a new implementation of this type of technology?

Its a move from several diferents LMS ( some of them developed by UPC in the early 90's ).
-- If it is a move from another LMS, do you have a migration plan that the community can review?
We are discussing this matter rigth now, there are diferents views of how it must be done, and unfortunately technical and educational reasons are'nt allways enougth beacuse political issues are involved.  I'll ask to the team if some paperwork can be released.

Some teachers in UPC ( like me) have been implementing moodle on our own. All experiencees habe been successfull and inspiring to take the decision.

Now we are planning a big pilot experiencie for the next september ( I'must prepare the instructors formation in a matter of weeks... ) . Our target is to integrate moodle in all our studies (30.000 students).

RIgth n ow what we have to decide is if we want a ONE BIG moodle for all the UPC, or we want to build a United Federation Of Moodles in the UPC where each functional group manages his moodle implementation .

Any Ideas?

Ludo
