Installing and upgrading help

I'm new to Moodle and trying to a get a better handle on it and setting up courses and etc.
I've read some of the posts about problems with Moodle and safe mode and I was wondering about a couple of issues.
- My hosting svc has safe mode on and I was able to ftp a zipped course file up. Am I able to restore it with safe mode still on? If not, is there a work around for it? Some of the replys have suggested getting another hosting service, but that's not an option right now.

- If they turn safe mode off long enough for me to upload and restore some demo courses and then turn it back on, will Moodle still run the way it supposed to?
