Site-wide forums

My question is (or perhaps 'was') how do i set up a site-wide forum? However, in making this post - my first here - I was asked to enrol in the 'course'.

Does this mean that the only way of having a site-wide forum is to enrol all of the users in a sort of dummy 'course' that contains this forum? My intent was to set up a tech-support forum for our small band of users.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not set up a course with a forum and maybe a chatroom for tech support.

Alternatively put the help desk module in.

I'm looking at the same sort of issue with our installation. I believe it's supposed to be possible to set up a forum on the front page, and if you've given the role "authenticated users on front page" permissions to post/reply/view etc, then it should work. Or have the logged in user role on the front page be student.

It looks like course forums require enrolment, permission overrides aren't enough.

But it might be handy to have a whole course area and enrol in that anyway -- FAQs, examples, wiki could all also be useful.
