I have also run into the same issues while attempting to trial upgrading our 1.9.9+ install to various version of 2.0 with the latest being yesterdays build of 2.0 RC2.
I've attempted various fixes, initially thinking that although we use MySQL for Moodle we have used MSSQL for enrolments and that some NULL values had come through from MSSQL and were causing MySQL grief. I haven't really gotten anywhere though and it's a showstopper I haven't managed to get around.
Have you had any luck? You're the first person I've come across with the same issue.

I also got the same issue when updating from 1.9.19 to 2.2. Any solutions please?

I also having the similiar problem. I am upgrading from Moodle198 to Moodle2.0 or Moodle2.01
both having the same problem and halted there!

sorry to resurrect an older thread but I was wondering if there was a fix for this. I am running into this issue from a 1.9.5+ instance to 2.0 and 2.0. Same error that Mark received.

I gave up on this and just stayed with 1.9
