Groups in the News forum

Groups in the News forum

Greetings again all,

Just looking to see if there is a way you can put groups into the Latest News forum?  We have several semesters running at the same time and want certain messages to only go to certain groups.  Are we better putting individual forums in the individual courses that have the groups, or is there a way to decide which groups a message goes out to?  We are using Moodle 1.98

Thanks in advance.

Last time I checked If you set the news forum to separate groups and announced to a certain group (by selecting the group in the forum and then posting the announcement) only members of that group could see the announcement in the latest news block. 微笑

As you can see, there is no choice on who to post it to.  Obviously there is a setting somewhere I need to tick or untick to make this happen.  Any hints before I spend the next few hours checking every single tickbox in Moodle?  微笑

You select the group before you add the discussion topic. In separate groups mode each group has its own instance of the forum. By selecting the group in the dropdown you virtually enter the forum instance of that group. There you will see only the announcements that were posted to that group + the announcement that were posted to 'all participants' (which everyone can see). You will see the designated group name at the bottom of the add topic form, and also in the list of topics. 微笑

Thanks again... but again as you can see I don't get that choice.  Must be something that I have ticked or unticked that is taking it away.  When I go into the forum setting, it has Group Mode set to Seperate Groups.  Not sure what is going on?

Does it make a difference that this forum is the one on the main page, not the one in a course?

hahaha yeah... if it was only that simple  微笑

I have two groups, 10A and 10B (simple names but they mean something to us)

Okay, now I see that this is a front page issue or rather site-wide groups. Unfortunately, this is resolved only in version 2.0. See for instance this thread, and this tracker issue. 微笑

Yeah I just quickly made up a test course, put two groups in it, wacked two test students into each group, and straight away I could do it.  So yeah it's a Front page issue because as far as I am aware you can't make groups on the front page.
