We are working through a similar model. What we ended up doing is using one of the payment plug-ins for enrolments.

Go to: Home > Courses (in the Administration block) > Enrolments. Here there are many options. We first tested with PayPal - this was super easy! However, we have since elected to go with Authorize.net, which is a little more complicated, but still fairly easy.

Once you have enabled your choice, you must click on the "Edit" option in the Settings column to actually set the details of your account.

NOTE: Authorize.net requires that you enforce secure login (https vs. http). This cannot be done until you have purchased an SSL certificate and have had it installed on the server that is hosting your website. Please take heed about this - I made the mistake of enabling https before my site server could support it and actually locked myself out!

Anyway, once you have enabled payments for enrolments, you will be able to charge per course. In our case most of our courses are free; however, we have certification tests that are not.

The key is that all of our students must self-enroll in the courses that have a fee associated. We handled this by automatically assigning all students to the "Guest" role. They must then register themselves into each course (simply by clicking the course name). When a student encounters a course with a fee, they pay through the Authorize.net plug-in and then are enrolled into the course.

It's pretty slick! Again, PayPal was much easier (no SSL was required), but it is quite expensive, so we opted for Authorize.net.

Hope this helps!
