Apache 1.3 vs. Apache 2 under heavy usage (on Linux)?

I've seen warnings about Apache 2 having slight problems with PHP under heavy usage. I'm running Moodle with Apache 2.0.52 and PHP 5.0.2 just fine, but with no load to speak of and under Windows XP.

What about Linux based sites with tens or hundreds of simultaneous connections/PHP threads? Have you had weird problems with Apache 2? Tried with Apache 1.3?

Now that there has been recent discussion on the subject of "most reliable platform", I'd like to ask this again. There was the error in which logged in users switched to another account. I couldn't find it from the forums, but remember seeing it. Was it only on Apache 2 or on both 1.3 and 2?

Martin L, are you running Apache 2 in the "middle range" smile installation you have? The situation might be different with vanilla Apache and with phpa, squid, proxy and the like...
