We currently are running on NetWare 6.5 but are encountering to many problems. The plan is to change. We are new to this and your input would be greatly appreciated. NetWare is turning into a nightmare. What is the best most stable platform. We are running three sites, one designated for our on-line nursing program, The on-campus testing, and one site for the High school. All three are in development with the online course being the most critical as far as time. Over all there could be as many as 3000 students enrolled in the courses. Overall very pleased with moodle but just not very pleased with the netware setup.

thanks

If you're a Netware shop, then I'd probably look at running on SUSE Enterprise Server 9 (you have the license and support include in your ALA if you're an ALA customer).

Overall, in my experience across Netware, Linux & Mac OS X, php/mysql apps seem to generally run best on Linux.

paessler, a company flogging a webserver stress tool, have this report about linux and windows webservers.

If you are in the UK, may's .net magazine is giving away an old crippled version that makes pretty graphs of your server load smile

If switching to Linux, Moodle 1.4.4 is in Debian already. No worrying about dependencies or anything. Install "Sarge" and do "apt-get install moodle".

Our (sizable) Moodle cluster runs on Debian Sarge purrfectly smile

Debian has a reputation for stability based on a conservative approach to package selection, so if stability is a priority, it could be a good path.
