Dear all,

STACK is a computer aided assessment system for mathematics.
The current version is integrated into Moodle.

I know from the volume of email I receive that STACK is being widely used, in some places by large numbers of students. E.g. up to 4000 users at a single site. However, while companies have data on customers, open source software is available for free download. To get a better idea of the extent to which STACK is being used with students I would invite you to take part in a short survey:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/35QQVH3

I appreciate the value of your time, but it would assist me greatly in making a case for future funding to support the development of STACK if current users could provide me with some details of their usage.

For colleagues who have looked at STACK but decided not to make use of it, I would very much like to know why they have chosen not to do so.

In releasing the STACK computer aided assessment system we invited colleagues to join the STACK online community

http://stack.bham.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=16

Those people who use, or are interested in, STACK are again invited to join and contribute to this site.

If you would like to contact me directly about STACK, rather than completing the survey, then please feel free to do so.

Thank you.

Dear all,

I'd like to thank all those who took part in the survey. STACK is clearly useful to a large number of students.

Executive summary

STACK is a computer aided assessment system for mathematics which makes use of the computer algebra system Maxima to generate random questions, establish the properties of answers and to provide sophisticated mathematical feedback. This document reports the results of a survey of who uses STACK and the extent of this use. Ten sites responded to the survey to report their use of STACK. The code base is sufficiently reliable for regular use with very large (> 1000) groups of students. STACK is available in English and has been translated into Finnish and Japanese.

The most significant barrier to use was the difficulty in installing STACK, both for evaluation and for deployment.

Hi Chris,

I been very busy doing websites.  Stack is a great tool for teaching mathematics.  It integrates into Moodle. The only bad thing is the installation.  If anyone needs help send me an e-mail.  I do have it working on a $10 a month server.  No root access.
