Can't access php.ini file, don't know how to change display_errors setting

I have installed Moodle on a rental server, and apparently don't have direct access to the php.ini file. In my administrator notifications, I am getting this message:

Enabling the PHP setting display_errors is not recommended on production sites because some error messages may reveal sensitive information about your server.

Is this a security compromise that I should worry about? According to my PHP info, the display_errors is set to "STDOUT." Does that have the same vulnerability as the "on" setting? Any suggestions on what I should do?
