I have been asked if students can enter grades anywhere that will show in the teachers gradebook. For example, the teacher sets the students to do practice papers at home or in class. They are then marked by the student. The teacher then wants the students to enter the result onto moodle so he can see an overview of this. I know a journal might be one solution but is there a more direct way?
If your grades are numbers/percentages you could make a quiz - just one question -"what was your grade?" and use numerical question type. For 100% give them grade of 100%; for 90% give them grade of 90% correct etc etc...could take you forever but it would enter their grades directly into your gradebook
(edit) as I see you are in UK (like me) and your grades might not be percentages - another workaround -although it wouldn't enter them directly into the gradebook - would be to use the online text assignment - one step further on than the journal - and then when you click on "view submitted assignments" you can see the line of students's submissions and the word/mark they entered for their grade - pass/merit etc -but that is less good as it comes up as a submission to be marked by the teacher,rather than automatically going to the gradebook.

Thanks Mary for the suggestions. Yes, I though about a quiz like that. However if I remember correctly you can only put certain percentages in i.e 90% but not 91%,92% etc. I think the journal might be the way forward for the moment.

Chris - yes you can add other percentages to the quiz! Any you want!
Mary, OK - I've tried and failed!Can you tell me how? All the things like multichoice, numerical etc have preset percents. Foe example the lowest is 5%. Type in 4 and it goes to 40%. I use cloze a lot, I might explore this.
right -you've set me thinking now I'm sure i did this ages ago but can't remember on which Moodle and now I'm starting to think I imagined it -will go away and test and see what I can come up with - in the meantime, let me know how you get on with other possibilities!
Mary - I think I have cracked the answer using cloze. This code works..
{100:MULTICHOICE:%10%10#~%20%20#~%30%30#~%40%40#~%50%50#~%60%60#~%70%70#~%80%80#~%90%90#~=100#}
and returns that mark from a drop menu to the gradebook (with quiz mark set to 100).
Thanks for bouncing ideas. Still interested in how to change % in standard quiz questions. All I need to do now is change my code to cover the whole range!

Aha Well - the answer I was going to give you was to use the numerical question in the lesson module -that does it for you and I must have been thinking of that.
I have now taken this to 100 but the dropdown menu will only go as far as 41 and it starts with a B - very odd. Will take this to the questions forum.
However it does get the selected grade into the grade book ok.
If anyone can see where I've gone wrong please let me know!!
